Ayat-e-Mawadda

Q:

Why is “Fi” used instead of “Li” in “Mawaddat Fil Qurba” in Ayat-e-Mawadda while “Fi” means “in” and “Li” means “For” in Arabic?

A:

Wa Alaikum al-salam

thanks for your question

First, “fi” like other  particles of jarr, has more than one meaning, and some of its meanings are similar to “Li”.

Also “fi” express a more abroad meaning with more depth. “fi” means that our love must be in them and in their way but “Li” means loving them; as we can see in the last Ayat of Surah al-ankabut Allah swt says “Fina” (29:69 “As for those who strive in Us, We shall surely guide them in Our ways, and Allah is indeed with the virtuous.”) one the reasons might be using “jihad” with “Fi” includes more actions with pure intention, so everything could be a strive in Allah (and his path)  unlike using it with “La” which includes only what Allah swt commanded. So prophet sawa asked us to spend our love in Ahl al-bayt a.s and in their way, hence if I show my love to ahl al-bayt a.s and whoever loves them as well.
