Ask an Alim

Authenticity of the following article?

Q:

As-salamu alaykum,

I was reasearching about what meat I am able to eat in the United States and I came across this article and it said people went to the prophet (pbuh) and didn’t know any information on how the meat was cut. So the prophet (pbuh) replied “Mention the name of Allah upon it and eat it.” Is this correct?

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

Forbidden to you is that which dies of itself, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that on which any other name than that of Allah has been invoked, and the strangled (animal) and that beaten to death, and that killed by a fall and that killed by being smitten with the horn, and that which wild beasts have eaten, except what you slaughter, and what is sacrificed on stones set up (for idols) and that you divide by the arrows; that is a transgression. This day have those who disbelieve despaired of your religion, so fear them not, and fear Me. This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed My favor on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion; but whoever is compelled by hunger, not inclining willfully to sin, then surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

I can imagine it is very difficult in these situations but unfortunately, you cannot eat chicken or meat unless sure it was slaughtered according to Shar’iah.

You can eat rice, vegetables and types of different proteins, calories, carbohydrates etc. You can try to find out some places where you can get Halal chicken or meat.

According to Quran and Sunnah what we learn from the Mujtahideen is that if you are not sure that the name of Allah is taken while slaughtering the goat or chicken then it is not allowed while living in a non-Muslim country. But if we live in a Muslim country then a person can purchase it from the Muslim seller and that is considered Halal.

The above verse clearly states, it is forbidden that on which any other name than that of Allah has been taken. So living in a Muslim society also, if a person doesn’t slaughter the goat or chicken facing Qiblah and taking the name of Allah, it is considered Haram, let it be alone buying from a non-Muslim society where we are sure they do not slaughter Islamically.

Regarding food cooked by the Hindus or Buddhists, if you are 100% sure that they are touching the food directly then it would be Haraam to eat.

155. A Muslim is allowed to eat the food prepared by a non-Muslim who is not from Ahlul Kitãb [for example, a Hindu or a Buddhist], provided that he does not know or is not sure that the non-Muslim touched the food with wetness; and provided that he does not know or is not sure that the food consists of what is forbidden to him like intoxicating drinks. As for meat, fat and their extracts, there are specific rules that will come later on.

In Shias according to the Mujtahideen what has been mentioned above is the understanding from Quran and Sunnah. Regarding the hadith, I haven’t come across it but even if we consider it correct, it would be for the Muslim country and not for the non-Muslim country.

Allaho A’lam

May Allah(swt) grant you success
