Ask an Alim

Asking Allah’s approved friends for help

Q:

As per Surah 5 ayat 35: Does the Quran order me to go to Hadhrat Ali’s (as) grave or go to another approved Wali’s grave and ask him to ask Allah to grant me a need? What if I cannot afford to go? Can then, at a distance, my whole family ask the saint for our needs and will he hear all of our prayers simultaneously? What if I ask Allah directly, will I be on Touheed?

Wa Alaikum al-salam

Thanks for your question

First you don’t have to visit the grave of masumeen a.s for intercession between you and Allah s.w.t; every one of masumeen a.s has a close ziarah (which is done when we go and visit their grave) but also they have a ziarah from far away (which can be read from everywhere). also there are lots of ziarat are known as common ziarah which you can recite for more than one imam for example “Ziyarat Jamiah Kabirah” which advised by imam zaman atf, this ziarah can be red both in the holy shrines and form away and can be donated to any imam a.s (link: http://www.duas.org/commonziarats.htm).
Second, the meaning of this aya according to imam sadiq a.s hadith is intercession through masumeen a.s. this mean could happen by ziarah and also dua, there are lots of duas regarding this (for example: dua tawassul, or istighatha to imams).
Third, in surah 2 ayat 186 Allah s.w.t also says “When My servants ask you about Me, [tell them that] I am indeed nearmost. I answer the supplicant’s call when he calls Me.” so we can ask our needs directly from allah s.w.t
