Ask an Alim

Can a revert marry a Muslim man without her fathers permission

Q:

Asalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu sheikh.

Just a little bit of background about myself:

My name is Lana and I am 23 years old. I have converted to Islam 5 years ago Alhamdulilah.

I have recently managed to convince my mother of Islam and she has said she shahada Alhamdulilah although she is taking it slow and isn’t practising yet. My dad is a non-muslim and doesn’t exactly have the best view of Islam and Muslims. I do not have any Muslim relatives.

My question relates to the topic of marriage in the sense that I currently have somebody in my life that I want to marry but I want to know the exact conditions on how I can go about it islamically.

Due to not having any male mahram does that mean I am allowed to get married without my fathers permission? I know it is always wise to ask for help but in case my dad refuses the man I want to marry should I listen to him?

Also I would like to ask for which things should I look for in a husband islamically.
I know there is deen and character but I am wondering if I should consider finance/immigration status as important in Islam.

Also, relating to mahr, could you please advice me the Islamic law relating to mahr/how much you should get/ should I ask for it or does the man give what he can.

Thank you so much in advance

Jazakallahu Khair

Lana

A:

Waalykum salam Sister

thank you for your Question and a very warm welcome to our Muslim community.

1- According to Islamic laws. A virgin girl must obtain her father or paternal grandfather’s permission for marriage. Otherwise the Nikah in invalid. However, in your case, the office of Sistani replied that the condition of seeking permission from your father or paternal grand father does not apply to you.

2-  kindly refer to the link below for Understanding marriage and the conditions it has

3- Kindly read the following for understanding spouse selection:

InshaAllah this was useful
