Ask an Alim

Are we allowed to play the quran in the washroom?

Q:

I am new to this Deen. I am very curious on the topic if we are allowed to play the quran in the washroom? Especially if we are going through a spiritual illment?
if not where is the proof in the quran?

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

Welcome to the best religion in the sight of Allah(swt) as stated in verse 19 of Surah Aale Imran.

Surely the (true) religion with Allah is Islam, and those to whom the Book had been given did not show opposition but after knowledge had come to them, out of envy among themselves; and whoever disbelieves in the communications of Allah then surely Allah is quick in reckoning.

If it is counted as disrespect towards Qur’an then one must refrain from this.

It would have been good if you had mentioned more about spiritual illness. From your statement either it means, if we can play Qur’an in toilet or while having bath to stay away from sin or some other spiritual illness which one always has.

Regarding the proof you asked. There are 2 main sources in Islam to extract the ruling, Qur’an and Sunnah(the sayings and actions of the Prophet and the Imams). As for some rulings, there are main rulings mentioned in the Holy Qur’an but the explanations are given in the Sunnah such as Salat being wajib, but the number or Rak’ats are not mentioned in the Qur’an. The number of rak’ats we get from the Sunnah mentioned by Prophet Muhammad(s.a.w.w). So regarding your question we learn from Sunnnah that anything which shows disrespect towards Qur’an is Haram and impermissible.

I would recommend you to read different books from this authentic site to increase your knowledge www.al-islam.org
