Ask an Alim

Are men and women equal in Islam?

Q:

Hello!
I have a question.

Are men and women equal in Islam?
After reading 4:34 (verse and chapter) ,I am  doubtful that if Islam considers them equal.

A:

Al-Salam Alaykum

According to Islam Men and Women are equal in worth and in the eyes of Allah. As Quran say إِنَّ أَکْرَمَکُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاکُمْ. the best of you are the pious one. (Whether they are men or women, black or white, reach or poor, etc)

In the family, however, one must be in charge and be the manager and the verse you mentioned is about the manager of the family. These differences are because of the differences in the abilities and faculties. Also, these are responsibilities and duties for men to make the best decision for their family and not to act selfishly and do whatever they want. if they do not act on the best interest of their family they would lose this privilege.

we would also like to add that equality is not to be the same! equality would be to treat each individual, in this case gender, according to what they deserve and their capabilities.
