Activist movements

Q:

Salaam. I want racial equality for all people and I’m a strong believer in that. I also support what black lives matter are standing up against. However I have heard that you shouldn’t support black lives matter because they support the lgbtq community, in terms of they are a kuffar organisation and so they accept lgbtq. And if so then in that case should we also not support the free Palestine movement because it’s a movement that wants to support all people including the kuffar?

A:

Walaykum Al Salam

Islam is against all forms of oppression even against our own enemy and those who sin – for Allah SWT does not love those who trangress.

See 2:190:
“Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress. Indeed Allah does not like transgressors.”

And there is no difference between black and white, male or female, but rather, the best of us are those who are most pious:
See 49:13
“Indeed the noblest of you in the sight of Allah is the most Godwary among you. ”

So you are correct in wanting to support the BLM movement for the purpose of supporting humanity. Even Sayyid Khamenei said the same: https://twitter.com/khamenei_tv/status/1265677848142123010 where he said: If you’re dark-skinned walking in the US, you can’t be sure you’ll be alive in the next few minutes. #ICantBreathe #BlackLivesMatter

So you can support the “movement” for its cause however not its hidden agenda. For example, you can avoid any issues by saying All Lives Matter or the like.

In terms of Palestine, again, Islam supports all those who are oppressed, Muslim or otherwise, and it is our duty to protect them as per the teachings of the Holy Quran and Ahlul Bayet.
