Acquiring real estate for investment…

Q:

Salaams,

I’m interested in buying a property that has a convenience store and the convenience store pays rent for the property so I would be their landlord. If the convenience store sells alcohol, and the city and government allow them to do so, would this property investment be harm for me ? Please help.

JAK May Allah reward you all for your guidance.

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

According to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany’s office, if you are giving out the place for rent with the intention of selling Halal products other than wine, then it is permissible to take the rent but if you are giving the place to sell wine then it is Haram to get the money.

But if a Muslim owns a place, he is not allowed to sell Alcohol.

Question: I am running a store and I have non-Muslim customers who want me to sell them alcoholic drinks. Can a Muslim buy and sell intoxicating alcohol to non-Muslims?

Answer: It is not permissible to buy and sell alcohol.
